Harbourside Joinery

Original timber sash windows restored to working order. We repair, don't replace — keeping the character of your terraced home and avoiding the cost of new frames.

Sash Window Repair

Sash windows in the older terraces

The houses around the docks and through the terraced streets nearby were built with timber sash windows that have stood for a hundred years or more. Salt air off the harbour, seasonal movement in old timber, and simply the wear of opening and closing take their toll. Rotten sills, swollen frames, broken cords — these are the jobs we see week in and out, and they're what we know how to fix properly.

What we repair

Sash cords and pulleys

When the cord breaks, the window won't stay up. We replace the cord, service the pulley, and the sash works again.

Timber splicing

Rather than rip out the whole frame, we splice in new oak or ash to replace the rotted section. The window keeps its original proportion and character.

Easing and re-glazing

Swollen sashes that stick, cracked panes, old putty that's dried out — we ease the frame, fit new glass, and re-putty it properly.

Draught-proofing

Period sashes will never be airtight like a modern window, but we can seal them sensibly so you're not heating the street.

Servicing

A clean, oil and adjustment keeps your sashes working smoothly. Preventative care beats emergency repair every time.

Finishing

Paintwork stripped, primed and finished in the colour you choose. We use traditional paint that lets the wood breathe.

Repair over replacement

Your terraced house was built with sash windows that sit in the frame exactly right — the proportions of the glass, the depth of the reveal, the way the frame sits in the wall. Replace them with modern units and you've lost something you can't get back.

Repair costs less than replacement, takes a fraction of the time, and keeps the house looking as it was meant to look. A window that's been serviced properly works just as smoothly as a new one, and costs a tenth as much.

Where we work

We've repaired sash windows in the docks terraces and right across the harbour town for years. This service extends to the villages within roughly twenty miles of the workshop — we know the roads and we know the houses.

If you're in doubt whether we reach your place, drop us a line. We'd rather say yes than no.

Getting a quote

Sash windows need to be looked at properly before we can give you a price. We'll visit your home, inspect the windows, talk through what needs doing, and give you a straight number with no surprises.

Most jobs are completed within six to eight weeks. That's not because we're slow — it's because we do the work properly, and good work takes time.
